LAPTOP's Guide to 4G

LAPTOP's Mark Spoonauer explains everything you need to know about 4G technology, including how fast it is and where it's available. The next generation of mobile broadband, 4G promises up to 5 times the speeds of today’s 3G networks. But what can you do with that speed, how much does it cost, and where can you get the service? Check out this quick video buyers’ guide and all the gear you need to get 4G goodness on the go. LAPTOP's Guide to 4G from LAPTOP Magazine on Vimeo.
One of the main reasons for getting CLEAR WiMAX internet service as of today, is most likely the attractiveness of getting a connection all around town while out and about. Increased mobility is the name of the game these days, especially with the popularity of smartphones such as the iPhone, Blackberry, and now Droid. Let's face it, data plans on 3G networks are still rather pricey, and it's not always easy to find a hotspot when you're on the go and need to get online. There's also something to be said about powering up the laptop or netbook, pluggng in…
CLEAR made their WiMAX service available to the public in Austin, Texas on Sunday, November 1st. Coverage at this time is running mainly up the I-35 corridor from around Slaughter Lane to just North of Round Rock. Only a portion of the the 3 to 4 hundred towers that will eventually make up the complete system form San Marcos to Georgetown have been turned on so far. This will be changing almost daily, so if you're not in coverage one day, you may be shortly. This is the "soft launch" of the WiMAX service, which means CLEAR will not be…
So, I’m looking at my bill from Suddenlink, and see that I’m paying about $57.00 a month after fees and taxes for my 8 Mbs x 512 Mbs internet service. I’ve had Suddenlink (previously Cox) since the service was offered here in Pflugerville. The service has been pretty reliable, but it does tend to get slow in the evenings. I recently changed my DNS servers to openDNS, as lately, I could not get the Suddenlink  servers to get me to where I wanted to go. This was happening every single night around 7 or 8 pm. My options here are…
We think the Clear Spot Wi-Fi router is one of the more interesting aspects of the CLEAR WiMAX service coming to Austin soon. We mentioned the Clear Spot in an earlier article, so we're not going into a lot of detail here. Essentially, the Clear Spot allows you to set up a Wi-Fi hot spot for up to 8 Wi-Fi enabled devices such as laptops, phones, and more. We found a really good YouTube video showing a side by side comparison of WiMAX 4G speeds compared with the 3G speeds you typically get from your cellular service. If you've already…
"So, you want some CLEAR WiMAX do ya? Have I got a deal for you..." Your salesman may not resemble this guy, but just as with used cars (or anything else for that matter), you should be happy with your purchase and your service after spending your hard earned money. Purchasing service online, or at a brick and mortar store is a method used by many new WiMAX customers, but presents one problem area that is echoed by a few unlucky consumers...they can't get a good signal when they go to set up their home modem. The first step in…
In case you haven't heard, Austin, Texas is getting CLEAR WiMAX internet service in town very soon. WiMAX is an exciting technology, as it basically makes the whole city of Austin and areas from San Marcos up to Georgetown a hugh Wi-Fi hotspot. Don't confuse it with Wi-Fi, although the basic premise is the same, that is, you connect to the internet through a wireless connection. This website has quite a bit of information regarding WiMAX, what it is, and what it has to offer, so we won't go into detail here. Just browse the WiMAX menus if you would…

CLEAR WiMAX Home Modem

The CLEAR home modem is actually a Motorola CPEi 150 and was designed as the plug-and-play desktop indoor WiMAX modem. This is Wave 2 Ready Solution for Wireless broadband and operates in the 2.5GHZ band. Plug the ethernet cable into your computer, power it on and automatically connects to the WiMAX network and authenticates itself for easy setup. The only connections for this modem are the power jack, and one ethernert port, similar to any modem provided by cable or dsl providers. If you're going to use this modem for more than just one computer in the household, than you…
If you're a WiMAX subscriber, or thinking about becoming one, you probabaly put mobility, or the ability to connect anywhere around town, as a high priority.
